Function and operation of control valves

Regardless of their specific design, control valves, as can easily be seen from their name, are designed to regulate and control tasks and properties. They are responsible for ensuring a specific flow rate, for example of liquids, at a specific location. For this reason, hydraulic valves always have a built-in safety valve that prevents the previously defined limit from being exceeded. Within a hydraulic circuit these small components therefore perform an essential task: ensuring the functionality, safety and efficiency of the entire system.

Differentiation by type of activity

Control valves can be regulated in different ways; some even offer multiple control options. The classic, old-fashioned version is manual operation, in which the flow rate is controlled mechanically via, for example, push buttons or levers. An electric actuator works, for example, via joysticks, push buttons or switches, whereby the electric actuator is regulated either by current or electrical voltage.

Pneumatic and hydraulic actuators are controlled via compressed air or hydraulics, respectively. These operating methods are often combined with electrical control. They may even include a manual control element, such as an emergency shutdown.

Differentiation of control valves by mode of operation

The mode of operation must always be dependent on the system. There are two options: single-acting or double-acting control valves. The former work hydraulically in one direction, as is the case, for example, with tippers. Double-acting valves therefore work hydraulically in two directions; this is necessary if, for example, the machine has a rotary function to the left and right.

Furthermore, their function is differentiated based on black/white and proportionality. With black/white control valves, a hard start to the flow occurs as soon as the valve is actuated. These components are suitable for machines that do not require fine tuning. Proportional functionality allows for more precise control and is primarily used in machines where fine tuning is either necessary or desired. Proportional functionality may also have a positive effect on energy efficiency.
