THE CHALLENGE
Microorganisms (algae) are becoming increasingly important in industries such as food, pharma, and medicine. Algae are also being used, for example, as a food source for astronauts, as pollutant filters in agriculture, or in production of asphalt and biofuels.
The microorganisms are “produced” in specially designed cultivation systems/reactors. An algae reactor or algae bioreactor is a photobioreactor for cultivation of algae, into which carbon dioxide (CO2) is introduced. As they grow, the algae use the CO2 provided along with sunlight for photosynthesis. The advantages of cultivating microalgae (phytoplankton) compared to cultivating crops on land are the high yield for the amount of space, the absence of waste such as roots, and lower water consumption.

Successful cultivation of various types of algae requires perfect water, air, carbon dioxide, and temperature conditions. Even the slightest fluctuations can very quickly destroy entire batches that may have been maturing for weeks. It was at this point in the joint project that RIEGLER came into play as a specialist in air, since a new cultivation facility was to be equipped with RIEGLER components, for which ALGEATEC was relying on the Lutz Group.

THE SOLUTION
The product solution comprises more than 400 hose assemblies with various reducers, connectors, and throttle valves that have to meet the exacting requirements. The hose assemblies ensure that the CO2 reaches the algae.
